What We Believe
We believe that the Bible is God's inspired Word and our only standard for faith and practice. We believe that God’s Word holds absolute and essential truth for all mankind. Within its pages, we discover core truths that are unchanging and indispensable for every person wanting to follow Christ.
What We Believe
Watch this short video to hear about what we believe, then check out the sections below to dive deeper!
-
We believe in God the Father, Creator of all things visible and unseen (Genesis 1:1, Hebrews 11:3)
We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son, Our Savior (John 1:14, 1 John 4:9, John 3:16)
We believe in the Holy Spirit who convicts of sin, who indwells in every baptized Christian, who helps us in our weaknesses and empowers us to be fruitful Christians (John 16:5-15, Acts 1:7-8, Romans 8:26-27)
-
We believe God inspired the original writings of the Scriptures; and that they were without error (Mark 12:36, 1 Corinthians 2:12-13, 2 Timothy 3:14-16)
We believe the Bible is the final authority for all matters concerning faith, truth, morality, and Christian living (Isaiah 40:8, Matthew 5:18, 24:35; Romans 15:4, Hebrews 4:12)
We believe the Bible teaches that God is the Creator and Sustainer of human life, and that God created every person to be in His image. Life is sacred from conception to death. We believe that God creates each person as either male or female, and that this reflects the image of God in humankind (Genesis 2:23-25, Leviticus 18:1-20, Psalm 139:13-16, Romans 1:18-31, 1 Timothy 1:8-11)
-
Each person has been created by God, and each person has sinned against God. As a result, we are lost people and without hope apart from Jesus (Acts 4:12, Romans 3:23)
Salvation comes by grace through faith in Jesus (Matthew 26:28, Romans 5:8-11, Ephesians 2:8-9, 1 Peter 1:18-19)
Our response to God’s grace is to make Jesus Lord and Savior. This happens when we put our faith in Christ, repent of personal sin, confess Jesus as Lord, are baptized by immersion for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:45-47, Acts 2:38-39, Romans 6:1-7, 2 Peter 3:9, Colossians 2:12, Galatians 3:27)
-
The church is made up of Christians all around the globe (1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Revelation 7:9-17)
We long for the unity of all of God's people because that’s what God longs for (John 17:20-23)
We are a part of the Restoration Movement within the Church of Jesus Christ.
The Bible teaches that Jesus is the head of the church and has given authority to Elders to oversee and shepherd the local assembly (Ephesians 1:22, 1 Timothy 5:17, Titus 1:7, 1 Peter 5:1-2, Acts 20:28-31)
We believe we are not the only Christians, but we prefer to be called Christians, only (Acts 11:26)
-
Church membership had an early beginning where believers met together daily for teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and for prayer. (Acts 2:42-47)
The early church recorded who was becoming a part of this body of Christ. The “numbers of people added” represented Christians. (Acts 4:4)
The Church is an expression of commitment. (Ephesians 2:19, Acts 4:32-37)
The Church serves as a standard of commitment. Church membership is a commitment to provide support and accountability to other Christians.
The Church models caring. (1 Corinthians 12)
Church members exist to accomplish many functions – honor one another, share with each other, and practice hospitality to believers and those who are not yet Christians. Individual members make up the Body of Christ, and this body is the best means to accomplish the mission of Jesus – to seek and save the lost. (Luke 19:10)
Being spurred on is a result of being committed to a local church. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
-
Be immersed into Christ through Christian baptism. Those who are immersed into Christ at Southwest Church of Christ are considered a member. (Acts 2:41)
Publicly declare (to the congregation) your desire to place membership or transfer membership from another congregation as an immersed believer. (Matthew 10:32)
-
Protect and promote the unity of our congregation. (Philippians 2:2-8)
Share the responsibilities of our mission – to make disciples of Jesus Christ. (Matthew 28:18-19)
Serve the ministry of our congregation – to build up the body of believers. (Ephesians 4:11-16)
-
We believe the church isn’t a building or a meeting on a Sunday morning. We believe the church of Christ is a family of believers that lives out the gospel 24/7. (1 Corinthians 3:16-17, Acts 2:42-47)
